What Social Media platforms are still relevant for your business in 2020?
Did you know that the first Social Media platform called ‘Six Degrees’ was launched in 1997 (I know, I haven’t heard of it either)? Since then, there have been a continual arrival of new social networking platforms, some of which are still around today.
It’s crazy to think that Myspace and Facebook were launched within 7-months of each other and though Myspace had 3 years at the top, Facebook has rapidly changed the face of social media forever. Why? Facebook adapts with its audience. Within the past 16 years they have continued to bring innovation and social interaction to new levels in the online space. After all of these years they still maintain the number 1 position as the most-used social media site in 2020!
That being said, over the years, more platforms have tried to be the next big thing, and many platforms have failed in their efforts. It’s hard for businesses to keep up with the continual changes. We have come up with some questions to help you to find out what platforms are still relevant to you and your business in 2020:
Where are your audience?
Knowing where your audience are is the most important piece of advice that we can give you. If your existing market are 40+ years old, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn could be the most relevant for your audience. However, if your audience are teenagers and young adults, platforms such as Instagram should be your priority.
What are you trying to achieve through Social Media?
Are you focused on building a network to expand your B2B endeavours? Or maybe you’re just trying to connect with and build on your existing market… in any case, you have to know your goals to know what is relevant to you! From LinkedIn to Instagram, each platform has a purpose; wasting time and resources on a platform that isn’t relevant to you will inevitably detract your influence through other channels.
Are you paying attention to how the new players are performing?
Telegram, TikTok, Vine, Pinterest, Periscope, Tumblr – the list goes on and on. There are so many trends and forecasts to predict where social media going and how each platform can be used. Though you can see the figures online to see how each app is growing; it is only through experience that you can truly find out how the app is or isn’t relevant to your business.
